Room 327, Tuesday Morning

Juliet didn't make a habit out of going into the boys' bathroom or anything. That would be skanky. It was just, sometimes in the morning you realized were out of the good hair gel and needed to borrow your brother's, and you couldn't find him so you decided to see if maybe he'd left it lying around.

So you snuck into the boy's room and found a)no good hair gel and b)written proof that every boy at the school other than Jeremy was a pervy science geek.

She liked the Nyan gremlin, though. That was kind of cute in an annoying way.

She fled the bathroom quickly and went back to her room until ethics class, passing the time making a list of the many reasons girls were better than boys. Number one was that girls don't draw penises on their restroom walls.

"Juliet?"

The door was cracked open but Sov knocked anyway, keeping the other hand behind their back, hiding a present.

"Good morning, Sov!" Juliet sounded happy for the distraction. "Come in! How are you? I think I lost track of you at the picnic."

"There were a lot of people." Sov nudged the door open, and a little nervously extended the promised gift. Best to get over with that at once.

It was a small wooden box, awkwardly crafted and with a lid not quite fitting.

"I made it for you."

"Thank you," Juliet said, reaching out to take hold of the box. She stepped back, gesturing Sov in, before taking a seat on her bed and trying to open that ill-fitting lid.

The box was empty inside, and just large enough to hold some pieces of jewellery.

"I worked in the carpentry workshop," Sov explained, sitting down next to Juliet. "I made that in the evenings.

"Oh, that's ..." Juliet couldn't quite hide her confusion. She was happy Sov had thought of her and made something for her, but the box was a lot simpler than what she was used to when someone gave her a present.

"I'll keep it on my bureau," she decided. "It'll look really nice there."

Noting Juliet's reaction, Sov wondered what they had done wrong. You didn't give presents? Or this kind of present? They decided not to ask. That would just make it more awkward.

"So," Sov said, trying to think of a way to change the subject. "What classes are you taking?"

The problem was that Juliet was spoiled, really. In a decade she'd understand how special the box was, but right then...

She was grateful for the change of subject.

"Just two," she said. "Ethics and Friendship. I'm TA in Friendship. Have you met the pink pony professor yet?"

"The pink pony is a professor?" Sov sounded less surprised than they would once had of course. "I'm taking Bringing Literature to Life and Fighting for Funsies. The first one is a lot about fighting and the second one I'm not sure why I ended up in." They didn't sound very pleased about this.

"Jules, I think I'm out of the good hair gel," Jeremy announced as he made his way into her room with a perfunctory knock after he'd already opened the door. "Can I borrow some from you?"

Great twin minds.

"You could if I had any," Juliet said, slightly pouting. "I'm out too. I was trying to find you to see if I could get yours and I went into the boys' room. You guys are gross."

Jeremy gave her a confused look as he flopped down on the foot of her bed. "Why? What'd we do?"

"There's a whole poster full of phone numbers, science jokes, and drawings of anatomy," Juliet intimated, then realized how it might sound. "...I didn't stay there and stare at it or anything!"

"Seriously?" Jeremy asked. "Dude, I didn't even notice!" Because he was just about the most oblivious person in the world, sometimes. "Just as well, I guess, if there were science jokes. Except if they were astronomy jokes, those could've been pretty sweet."

Juliet smirked. "I don't think there were astronomy jokes," she said, though all science kind of read like blah-blah-blah to her. "...wait, do you know astronomy jokes?"

She kind of wanted to hear one if he did.

"No." Well, he knew a few rude ones involving Uranus, but one of the girls he'd kinda sorta been seeing at their last school had informed him those weren't funny. "But I could have learned one if there'd been any!"

"It was mostly cat drawings," Juliet informed him. "... hey, how were things with George?"

She had the attention span of a gnat. A gnat who listened to radio.

Miley was in the process of trying to make her way across the third floor with a crazy amount of bags in tow. It... wasn't working out too well. When the enormous pink sparkly suitcase crashed into the wall for the tenth time, she had to resort to foul language.

"Oh, mud crunkies!"

...Disney foul language.

And that was how she managed to trip over her suitcase and fall into Juliet's room. Oops.

"Um," she said, from upside down on the floor. "Hi?"

Seriously, how did a girl this uncoordinated know how to dance?

"Hi," Juliet said, turning her head upside down and utterly perplexed. "Did you seriously just fall into my room?"

"...Ta-da?"

So that would be a yes, Juliet. It wouldn't be the first time her clumsiness had landed her somewhere she wasn't invited.

Okay, Miley. Time to get up. She got to her feet, attempting to maintain some dignity as she plucked up the garment-bag-protected dress that had fallen with her, and pointed to the first thing she could spot that was worth commenting on.

"Cool... ceiling!"

Juliet stared for another second, then just went with it.

"... I think that water mark over my bed looks kind of like a panda," she confided, pointing. "See?"

Oh, hey! It kind of did!

And peering up at it gave Miley an excuse to drape her dress over the handle of one of the many suitcases currently clogging the hallway, so hooray for that.

"Yeah," she agreed, squinting up at it. "'Course, on this island? There could actually be a panda living up there and I wouldn't be surprised."

Maybe they should find out who lived directly upstairs.

Juliet pursed her lips, moving them to the side. "Maybe. I've never heard panda noises, have you?"

She might have asked what kind of noises pandas made, anyhow, but her eyes were zeroing in on the garment bag. "Looks like you just got back from a trip."

"I think it's kind of like a chittering?" she guessed.

...No. Not at all.

"And yeah! I spent a week at home in LA." Which was almost true! She had been home for... part of it. Then it dawned on Miley that that did not explain the garment bag or the dress poking out from underneath, and she hastily clarified, "There was, like, a family thing."

Because that was so much more detailed. And logical.

"Like a gala?" Juliet said wistfully, zeroing in on the dress like any good fashion hound. "Oh my god, a new Valentino. So cute. You';re lucky you got to go to a place with real shopping."

She might have noticed Miley was lying, but dressdressdress was more important.
